Long, hot summers are tough on furry family members. A good grooming routine helps pets shed their extra undercoat, keeps their skin healthy and turns care time into bonding time.
1. Brush more often, not harder
Loose undercoat traps heat. Brushing two or three times a week during shedding season lifts that fluff out before it ends up on your sofa. A dematting comb works through tangles gently, without pulling.
2. Think twice before shaving
For many double-coated breeds, a full shave can actually make it harder for them to stay cool and can expose skin to sunburn. Ask your groomer or vet what is right for your pet's coat.
3. Keep eyes and ears clean
Dust and dry air can lead to tear stains and crusty corners. Wipe gently around the eyes with a pet-safe wipe, and clean only the visible part of the ear. Never push anything into the ear canal.
4. Trim nails little and often
Short, regular trims are calmer than rare, big ones. Take off just the tip, use clippers with a safety guard and reward with a treat. If you are unsure, your vet can show you how.
5. Protect paws from hot pavement
Try the back-of-the-hand test: if you cannot hold your hand on the pavement for seven seconds, it is too hot for paws. Walk early in the morning or after sunset, and stick to grass or shaded paths.
6. Make water easy to find
Place fresh water in more than one spot at home, and bring a travel bowl on walks. Watch for heavy panting, drooling or weakness, which can be signs of overheating.
